War erupted 15 April 2023:
What began as a power struggle between Sudan's two most powerful military factions — the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) — has spiralled into one of the world's most devastating humanitarian catastrophes. Millions of civilians have been caught in the crossfire, with entire communities displaced, homes destroyed, and livelihoods wiped out overnight.
Famine confirmed in Darfur:
The UN has officially confirmed famine in Sudan — the first such declaration anywhere in the world in years. Conflict has dismantled supply chains, devastated harvests, and blocked aid convoys from reaching starving communities. Over 6.3 million people are living in emergency hunger conditions, and 375,000 face catastrophic, life-threatening starvation.
Health system in ruins:
Sudan's healthcare infrastructure has been systematically destroyed. Fewer than one in four hospitals remains open. Doctors and nurses work without electricity, medicines, or basic supplies — often in the line of fire themselves. Over 200 attacks on medical facilities have been documented, in direct violation of international humanitarian law.
Critically underfunded:
The UN's $4.2 billion Sudan response plan for 2025 — already considered the minimum needed to prevent mass death — is only 25% funded. That means three in every four dollars needed to sustain life-saving operations simply does not exist. Vital programmes providing food, medicine, water, and shelter are being suspended or shut down entirely.
